Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya has constituted a high-level investigation committee to probe the violent clashes that erupted on campus between Left-backed student bodies and ABVP members on August 19 and 20. The panel must be notified by August 21 and will examine the vandalism, property damage, and alleged assaults reported during the two-day turmoil. In a bid to de-escalate tensions, the administration has also ordered a comprehensive audit of CCTV footage, directed the registrar to coordinate with police for a fair inquiry, and convened an emergency meeting with all stakeholder groups — including faculty associations, student unions, and non-teaching staff — to discuss immediate safety measures. Temporary restrictions on outsider entry have been imposed, while the proctorial board has been empowered to identify and take disciplinary action against those directly involved in the destruction of university assets. The VC appealed for peace and urged students to refrain from provocative acts, emphasizing that academic activities must resume without disruption. Police have registered cases based on cross-complaints, and additional forces remain deployed at sensitive points across the campus.
